4-LAYER RESURFACING FACIAL: First Week Aftercare Checklist

Emeryville Bay Street and Shellmound district, appointment only. Wheelchair accessible. LGBTQ friendly. Digital wallets accepted.

You just did a 60-minute resurfacing facial that works through a sequence of exfoliation layers. Now the most important rule is simple: protect your skin like it’s fresh and new. For the first 48 to 72 hours, keep it out of sun and heat, skip sweating, avoid hot showers, swimming, and makeup, and stick to gentle cleansing plus barrier moisture. And yes, in Emeryville that usually means sunscreen even when the East Bay air feels cool or foggy near the waterfront.
First 24 to 48 hours after your skin resurfacing treatment: keep it calm
My 4-Layer Resurfacing Facial uses progressive layers with AHA’s, BHA’s, and enzymes. That’s why the first two days are about reducing irritation so you keep the smoothness, brightness, and firm feel you came in for.
48-hour rules I want you to follow: no heavy sweating, no steam room or sauna, no hot yoga, no hot showers on your face, no swimming pools or hot tubs, and no makeup.
Cleansing and moisture (simple on purpose)
Cleanse gently using lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. No scrubs, no cleansing brushes, and no exfoliating cloths. Pat dry, then apply a soothing barrier moisturizer. If your skin feels tight, don’t push through it. Add another thin layer of moisturizer instead of reaching for an “active” product.
SPF starts right away
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ once you leave my studio and every morning after. Mineral SPF is often the easiest on freshly resurfaced skin. If you’re running errands around Bay Street or walking near the Emeryville waterfront, reapply when you’re outdoors and add a hat for extra coverage.
Days 3 to 7: peeling is normal, picking is not
A light flake or peel often shows up mid-week. That’s your cue to stay steady, not to speed things up. Clients who get the best long-term glow tend to do the “boring” stuff well: gentle cleansing, consistent moisture, and strict sun protection.
- Don’t pick or scrub. If a piece of skin is lifting, trim it carefully with clean cuticle scissors instead of pulling.
- Keep showers warm, not hot. Heat can kick up redness and sensitivity.
- Hold off on waxing and lasers for 2 weeks. Your skin needs time to settle after a resurfacing face peel style treatment.
- Avoid chlorinated water for at least 72 hours. Pools and hot tubs can irritate and dry you out fast.
Timing tip for Emeryville: Plan your appointment so the first 48 hours are low-activity. If you’re doing Bay Street errands or commuting, keep it light. Heavy walking, biking, and sweaty transit connections can make those first couple days harder than they need to be.
The “less is more” routine that keeps facial skin resurfacing results
I’m big on thoughtful home care. A lot of my long-time clients come in specifically because they want powerful, well-chosen basics, not a cabinet full of half-used products. After this facial, simple tends to win.
AM: protect
Gentle cleanse (or just rinse if you’re sensitive), barrier moisturizer, then broad-spectrum SPF 30+. Reapply if you’re outdoors, even on bright, low-humidity East Bay days.
PM: repair
Gentle cleanse, then a soothing moisturizer. If you feel dry, apply a second layer. Skip acids, scrubs, and retinoids until I tell you it’s time.
If you’re tempted to add “just one more thing, ” pause and send me a note first. I’d rather help you protect the result than have you accidentally irritate fresh skin.
When to reach out to me (and when it’s just normal healing)
Mild tightness, light flaking, and a bit of pinkness are common after a resurfacing facial. What I don’t want you to do is “wait it out” if something feels off.
- Reach out if you have severe swelling, fever, increasing pain, pus, or skin separation.
- Reach out if you think you overdid sun or exercise and your skin suddenly feels hot, itchy, or significantly more irritated.
- Reach out if you’re not sure what you’re seeing. A quick check-in can save your results.

one of our regulars
I’m located in Emeryville in the Bay Street and Shellmound district, and I see clients coming in from Berkeley, Oakland, Albany, Alameda, and Piedmont. If you’re hopping on BART or the Emery Go-Round after your appointment, keep the ride easy, don’t rub your face, and let that fresh barrier stay undisturbed.

Quick FAQs I get right after a resurfacing facial
How soon can I wear makeup after a 4-LAYER RESURFACING FACIAL?
I recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours. If you’re still feeling warm, tight, or actively flaking, hold off a bit longer so you don’t trap heat or irritate your skin.
Can I exercise or go for a run the day after my 4-LAYER RESURFACING FACIAL?
It’s best to skip strenuous workouts for 24 to 48 hours. Sweat and heat can sting and prolong redness. If you need movement, keep it gentle and cool.
Will my skin peel after a 4-LAYER RESURFACING FACIAL and how long will it last?
Light flaking is common, often starting around days 3 to 5. It usually settles within a week. Don’t pick. Keep moisturizing and let it release naturally.
When can I resume retinol, glycolic acid, or other active ingredients?
Pause retinol, AHA’s, BHA’s, and strong actives for 7 to 14 days unless I’ve told you otherwise. When you restart, go slow. A little goes a long way after resurfacing.
Can I take public transit (BART or Emery Go-Ground) home after my treatment?
Yes. Just keep your hands off your face, avoid a sweaty commute if you can, and apply SPF if you’ll be in daylight. If it’s a bright Emeryville day, that sun hits harder than people expect.
What does “skin resurfacing treatment” mean for this facial?
For this service, resurfacing means we use multiple layers that exfoliate and refresh texture while supporting hydration. The goal is smoother, more even-looking skin without turning your week upside down.
Is this the same as a “resurfacing face peel”?
It’s peel-like in the sense that you’re getting progressive exfoliation, but it’s delivered through four distinct layers designed to exfoliate, rejuvenate, and hydrate. Some people peel lightly, some don’t.
Do you do IPL skin resurfacing with this service?
No. The 4-Layer Resurfacing Facial is an exfoliation-based facial using layered acids and enzymes, not IPL. If you’re comparing options, ask me what you’re trying to improve and I’ll point you in the right direction.
What’s the difference between facial skin resurfacing and a regular facial?
Facial skin resurfacing focuses more on texture and tone through controlled exfoliation. A regular facial can be more maintenance and hydration focused. This one is corrective, but still designed to feel comfortable and supportive for your barrier.
